COLORADO SB25-003 — HOW TO GET YOUR FIREARMS SAFETY CARD

Colorado now requires an extra safety process before you can buy certain semi-automatic firearms.Here’s how to get through it, step by step.

1️⃣ START WITH COLORADO PARKS & WILDLIFE (CPW)

Go to the Colorado Parks & Wildlife Firearms Safety Program website and start your application.

2️⃣ GET THE RIGHT BACKGROUND CHECK

You need a special background check for SB25-003.

We recommend TruDiligence:

IMPORTANT: If using another source for background check, make sure you choose the background check specifically for Colorado SB25-003. A regular background check will not work.

3️⃣ CONTACT YOUR COUNTY SHERIFF

Send your paperwork, background check, ID, and required fees to your county Sheriff’s Office.

• CPW fee: $52
• Your Sheriff may charge an extra fee.
• Note: Not all counties are providing Eligibility cards but many counties allow other county residences. Arapahoe, Adams, Weld, Denver, Jefferson

Once approved, you will receive your Firearms Safety Course Eligibility Card. It is good for 5 years.

4️⃣ TAKE THE REQUIRED SAFETY CLASS

After getting your eligibility card, sign up for a Colorado-approved firearms safety class.

The course we recommend is Shoot Indoors Central Park location as they offer the course for free if you become a member:

There are 4-hour and 12-hour classes, depending on your qualifications.

4-hour for those that have in-state Hunters education or verified out-of-state Hunters Education. 12-hour for those without Hunters Education.

You must pass the test with at least 90%.

5️⃣ YOU’RE ALMOST DONE!

After you pass the class, your instructor enters your results into the state’s system.

Now, when you go to buy a specified semi-auto firearm, your gun store (FFL) can check that you completed the required safety training with your Application FS ID, Last Name, and Test Date.

THE WHOLE PROCESS:

CPW Application → Special Background Check → County Sheriff → Eligibility Card → Safety Class → Pass with 90% or Better → Purchase Your Firearm.

⚠️ ONE IMPORTANT THING:

The SB25-003 background check is NOT the same as the regular background check (NICS) that the gun store does when you purchase a firearm. The eligibility card only applies to specific firearms that meet the criteria. The current list can be found on https://sbg.colorado.gov/firearms-dealer-division but does not represent all models and variations. Main criteria includes semiautomatic rifles and shotguns with detachable magazines and semiautomatic handguns that are gas-operated and have a detachable magazine.
